Tuesday’s sole SFCSL matchup featured two teams each looking for win number 2 as Chelten Baptist hosted the New Life Kings for their first matchup of the year at Field #1 on Tuesday.

The Kings went quietly in the first, managing one hit off veteran pitcher Scott. Chelten would not go down so quickly.

Patience at the plate paid off, as a mix of walks and fielding miscues gave them the chance to take a big lead early. The Kings defense was able to turn an inning-ending double play to stop the bleeding, but took a 5-0 deficit into the second.

Schyler, Bret, Josh, and Zach contributed hits and the Kings were able to cut into the lead with three runs of their own. In the bottom frame, three liners to the outfield surrounded a walk and a hit, and New Life set about the third inning looking to take its first lead.

The third inning started with three consecutive hits from Stoney, Toby, and Schyler, and productive outs from Johnson & Johnson (Bret and Dan – no relation) helped the Kings do exactly that, taking a 6-5 lead.

But the lead would not stay with New Life for long. A few Chelten hits and an overthrow to first helped bring home two runs, and when the dust settled Chelten had secured a 7-6 lead.

New Life was not able to return the favor in the fourth, producing only one hit, and Chelten went to bat eager to extend their just-recovered lead. And extend they would.

After a double and single, two flyouts to left-center sandwiched a walk, and the middle of the order faced two outs with bases loaded. Todd singled in a run, and Chandler hit a bomb and looked sure to circle the bases. The hit did clear the bases, but the ball got to catcher Josh from the outfield right around the time the batter reached home. Without a slide, the final out was recorded in enforcement of the league’s anti-collision rule. It was the final out, but with those four runs, Chelten had extended their lead back to the high-water mark of 5.

This time, New Life would respond in kind. Four straight Kings recorded hits, and each of them scored as the lead was cut right back to one. In the bottom of the fifth, the Kings needed a shutdown inning and got one, as Bret retired three straight batters with outs in the air.

In the sixth, New Life scratched out a run on Schyler’s fourth hit to even the score, and another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom frame left an 11-11 tie with just one inning left to play.

After a leadoff hit from Bret, Seth legged out a triple and gave New Life the lead. Following a liner to short, Seth took home on a groundout to extend the lead to 2.

After two quick flyouts, Chad hit a double, and Dan (CHE) brought him home with a base hit. Todd stepped into the batter’s box representing the potential winning run, but a fly ball to left-center was tracked down by Dan (NLG) to seal the narrow victory, with a 13-12 final.

The Highlights:

NLG: Schyler led the way with hits in all four at bats, while Zach and Stoney each tallied three hits and Seth batted 2 for 2. Toby, Dan, Bret, Seth, and Josh each contributed 2 RBI.
The middle of the outfield was busy for the Kings, as Schyler and Dan contributed to 11 of 21 recorded outs.

CHE: The team was patient at the plate, creating opportunities by forcing six walks. Chandler led the way with 3 RBI. (Full stats not available at time of press.)
